In 1975, Gary Riddle started his own small furniture store, selling new and used furniture out of the old Sherman School on 3300 South and 2300 East in Salt Lake City, Utah. During those years, he strived to build a business that could compete in a market that was already dominated by other furniture stores in the valley, yet Gary persisted in making his modest furniture store succeed.Over the years he slowly expanded, moving his locations occasionally throughout the valley, when in 1994 he landed in West Jordan on 7800 South and Road Redwood, or is it Redwood Road, oh I don't know. Anyways, this is where Furniture Warehouse really started to grow and build a name for itself.
At that time there were four stores using the generic name Furniture Warehouse, so to distinguish his store from all the others and to let everyone know where he was, he came up with the clever idea of "Road Redwood." Hence the phrase, "Furniture Warehouse On Road Redwood." It worked, people started coming into his store and would say, "Hey aren't you the Road Redwood guys?" Often times Gary would tell people that he owned Furniture Warehouse and they would always say, "Oh yeah, on Road Redwood."
So throughout the last decade, Furniture Warehouse has been affectionately known as the little furniture store on Road Redwood. Well, now, Furniture Warehouse is not so little. They have one of the largest furniture showrooms in the state, and in a time where an economy has struggled, Furniture Warehouse has grown leaps and bounds every year.
It is a credit to the hard work and determination of Gary Riddle. He pulled himself up with his own bootstraps and he and his family have built a great furniture store for a long time to come.
